Characteristics

Annual or biennial herb. Stems 1–several with (2–) 5–9 internodes below branches, (5–) 15–30 cm high. Basal leaves when present sessile, lanceolate-oblong, 10–35 mm long, 5–10 mm wide, obtuse. Stem leaves sessile, smaller than basal, ±of uniform size, narrowly elliptic, 5–20 mm long, obtuse to acute. Inflorescence open to rather dense and leafy; branchlets stiffly erect, spiciform or racemose, 5–9-flowered, monochasial; pedicels 2–15 mm long. Flowers 5-merous, 11–15 mm diam. Calyx lobes to 8 mm long. Corolla deep rose pink; tube c. 7–12 mm long, narrowly constricted 1.5–2 mm below base of lobes, especially in fruit; lobes c. 5–9 mm long. Stamens 5; anthers 1.5–3.5 mm long. Ovary 4–7 mm long; style c. 4–6 mm long; stigmas capitate. Capsule 8–10 mm long. Seeds c. 0.3 mm diam., very coarsely alveolate-rugose, dark reddish brown to black, opaque.
