Characteristics

Perennial herb. Stem erect, simple or branched from the base, 4-angled. Leaves opposite, much reduced and scale-like, sessile. Inflorescences in terminal compact heads. Flowers 4-merous. Calyx tube as long as lobes. Corolla tube cylindrical; lobes as long as tube. Stamens unequal, 3 sterile, 1 larger, fertile; filaments on corolla tube. Ovary unilocular; ovules numerous; style filiform; stigma bilobed. Capsule bivalved. Seeds minute.
