Schizachyrium claudopus Chiov.

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Schizachyrium

Characteristics

Tufted perennial, the basal sheaths tomentose; culms 15–100 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades 4–15 cm. long, 1–3 mm. wide, acute.. Racemes 6–10 cm. long, in a scanty false panicle of 1–4 racemes; internodes clavate, pedicels linear, both of them ciliolate on one margin; spatheoles linear, the racemes exserted.. Sessile spikelet lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 6–8 mm. long, dorsally compressed; lower glume firmly chartaceous to subcoriaceous, finely nerved, wingless, glabrous; upper lemma bifid for 3/4 its length (or merely bidentate if awn reduced); awn 0.5–15 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet narrowly lanceolate, 4–5.5 mm. long, glabrous, acute.
More
Sessile spikelet 4.5–6.8 mm long, 1/3(1/2) as long again as the pedicel, conical, laterally compressed, rounded at the base; inferior glume convex, the margins strongly inrolled; superior lemma shortly bifid at the apex (and awn stout and straight) or bifid almost to the base (and awn long and geniculate); awn up to10 mm long; anthers 1.5–3.3 mm long.
Racemes 5.5–11.5 cm long, stout, cylindrical, solitary on the culms, long exserted from the linear spatheole, glabrous; peduncles longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels canaliculate, very broad at the base (1.7 mm).
Leaves mostly basal; sheaths shorter than the internodes, covered with a dense indumentum of long curly white hairs at the base; laminas 2–10 cm × 1.8–3.3 mm, often inrolled and tapering to a fine point at the apex.
Densely caespitose perennial; culms up to 100 cm high, unbranched, slender, erect; internodes terete.
Pedicelled spikelet male, similar to the sessile spikelet but awnless.
