Schizachyrium exile (Hochst.) Pilg.

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Schizachyrium

Characteristics

Tufted annual; culms 10–120 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades 2–15 cm. long, 1–4 mm. wide, acute.. Racemes 3–6 cm. long; internodes and pedicels clavate, usually villous with hairs 1–3 mm. long, sometimes glabrescent; spatheoles linear to narrowly lanceolate, reddish, ± enclosing the subsessile racemes.. Sessile spikelet linear, 5–8 mm. long, squeezed between internode and pedicel; lower glume subcoriaceous, apparently nerveless (except at the tip), strongly convex with inflexed sides, keeled only near the tip, glabrescent to villous; upper lemma bifid for 3/4 its length; awn (7–)10–25 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet small, 1–2(–3) mm. long, with an awn 3–10 mm. long.
More
Tufted, robust annual 500-1 000 mm high. Leaf blade 20-150 x 2-3 mm, apex tapering; ligule undivided. Inflorescence always partly enveloped by a broad spatheole; raceme usually villous, sometimes glabrescent; internode clavate; pedicel flattened. Sessile spikelet 5-6 mm long, laterally compressed; lower glume glabrescent to villous; upper lemma bifid for 3/4 its length, awn (7)10-25 mm long; anther 0.4-0.7 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet much smaller, reduced to a glume 0.8-2.4 mm long, awn 3-10 mm long.
Racemes 2–7 cm long, ± stout, cylindrical, subsessile, usually enclosed by the broad spatheole for most of their length; peduncles shorter than the racemes; internodes and pedicels broad and canaliculate; spikelet base, internode, pedicel and inferior glume often with hairs up to 2.5 mm long.
Sessile spikelet 4.7–7 mm long, 1/4 as long again as the pedicel, narrowly lanceolate, laterally compressed, very pointed at the base; inferior glume strongly convex, the margins strongly inrolled; superior lemma bifid almost to the base; awn 9–20 mm long, geniculate; anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long.
Annual, tufted, up to 1 m high. Leaf blades 20-150 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, leaf blades with tapering tips. Spikelets (sessile) 5-6 mm long (pedicellate much smaller). Inflorescence partly enveloped by spathe.
Leaf sheaths much shorter than the internodes, glabrous; laminas 4–17 cm × 1–4 mm, tapering to a fine point at the apex.
Pedicelled spikelet reduced to an awned vestigial glume 0.8–2.4 mm long; awn 3.5–6 mm long.
Loosely caespitose annual; culms up to 85(110) cm high, erect branched.
The spatheoles at length becoming rusty red
