Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Schizachyrium

Characteristics

Sessile spikelet 5.5–7.5 mm long, 1/3–1/2 as long again as the pedicel, linear-ovate, dorsally compressed, rounded at the base; inferior glume slightly convex; superior lemma bilobed to less than 1/3 its length, the lobes slender and often contiguous to the awn (thus the lemma appearing entire), not keeled, with 2 purple nerves; awn terminal, 4–9 mm long, geniculate; anthers 2.7–3 mm long.
More
Racemes 1.5–3.5 cm long, silvery with usually dense long hairs 3–4 mm long on the internodes, pedicels and inferior glume, shortly exserted from the linear spatheole; peduncles longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels terete.
Densely caespitose, rhizomatous perennial, ± reddish-purple; culms slender, up to 50 cm high, branched; internodes terete, filiform at the base but wider at the top.
Leaves mostly basal, often falcate, green; sheaths shorter than the internodes, glabrous; laminas 1–3.5 cm × c. 2 mm, keeled, tapering to a fine point.
Pedicelled spikelet male, 4.5–5.5 mm long, similar to the sessile spikelet but awnless.
