Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Schizachyrium

Characteristics

Tufted perennial, 0.4-1.2 m high; conspicuously red in autumn; rhizome shortly creeping. Leaf blade 60-300 x 7 mm, apex rounded or abruptly pointed; ligule a fringed membrane. Inflorescence sometimes solitary and terminal, usually in a spatheate false panicle with solitary, cylindrical, narrow racemes; raceme nearly glabrous, hairs present only along margins of rachis and pedicel; internode and pedicels linear to clavate; spikelets paired, dissimilar: one sessile, the other pedicelled. Sessile spikelet 6-9 mm long, narrowly elliptic, laterally compressed; glumes ± equal, dissimilar; lower glume glabrous. Florets 2; lower floret sterile; upper floret bisexual, lemma bifid for almost whole length; central awn 8-21 mm long glabrous, geniculate; callus obtuse; anther 2.5-3.8 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet 4-7 mm long, male or sterile; lower glume awn 2-6 mm long. Flowering time Jan.-May.
More
Perennial, tussocky, whole plant often reddish brown. Culms erect, hard, 50–120 cm tall, 2–4 mm in diam., simple or branched, glabrous. Leaf sheaths keeled, glabrous; leaf blades linear, flat, 5–20 × 0.1–0.5 cm, glabrous, margins scabrid, apex acute; ligule ca. 1 mm. Raceme very slender, erect, distant, 3–9 cm, dark purplish red, finally long exserted from spatheole; rachis internodes and pedicels linear-clavate, equaling or slightly shorter than sessile spikelet, glabrous or white-ciliate. Sessile spikelet 5–8 mm; lower glume linear, leathery, convex with inflexed margins, keeled from below middle to apex, back scabrid, veins obscure, keels very narrowly winged toward apex, apex 2-toothed; upper lemma 2-lobed to near base; awn 1–2 cm. Pedicelled spikelet lanceolate, reduced to 1 or 2 glumes, 2.8–4 mm, lower glume with awn up to 3 mm. Fl. and fr. Jul–Dec.
Tufted perennial, the basal sheaths glabrous or rarely sparsely pubescent; culms 0.6–3 m. high, erect, the whole plant commonly reddish in colour.. Leaf-blades 6–30 cm. long, 2–9 mm. wide, acute (sometimes abruptly so).. Racemes 5–12(–20) cm. long; internodes and pedicels clavate, usually ciliate (hairs ± 1 mm.), sometimes glabrous or villous; spatheoles linear, the racemes pedunculate and ± exserted.. Sessile spikelet linear, 5–10 mm. long, squeezed between internode and pedicel; lower glume subcoriaceous, apparently nerveless (except at the tip), keeled almost the whole length of the flanks, narrowly winged above, glabrous to villous; upper lemma bifid for 3/4 its length; awn 8–20 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet lanceolate, 3–7 mm. long, acuminate or with an awn-point seldom over 3 mm. long.. Fig. 178.
Tufted perennial 400-1 200 mm high; often conspicuously red; rhizome shortly creeping. Leaf blade 60-300 x 7 mm, apex rounded or abruptly pointed; ligule undivided. Inflorescence raceme nearly glabrous, hairs present only along margins of rachis and pedicels; internode and pedicel clavate. Sessile spikelet 6-9 mm long, narrowly elliptic, laterally compressed; lower glume glabrous; upper lemma bifid for almost whole length, awn 8-21 mm long; anther 2.5-3.8 mm long. Pedicellate spikelet 4-7 mm long, awn 2-6 mm long.
Perennial, shortly creeping, rhizomatous and tufted, up to 1.2 m high, conspicuously red in autumn. Leaf blades 60-300 mm long, up to 7 mm wide, blade tips rounded or abruptly pointed; ligule undivided, strongly curved. Spikelets (sessile) 6-9 mm long (laterally compressed; pedicellate somewhat shorter). Racemes nearly glabrous.
Sessile spikelet 5.5–10 mm long, 1/2 as long again as the pedicel, narrowly lanceolate, laterally compressed, pointed at the base; inferior glume strongly convex, glabrous; superior lemma bifid in the upper 3/4; awn 10–22 mm long, geniculate; anthers 2.5–3.8 mm long.
Racemes 4–18 cm long, exserted from the linear spatheoles, occasionally long-exserted; peduncles longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels flattened, usually ciliate along both margins with hairs 2.5–4 mm long.
Leaf sheaths both shorter and longer than the internodes, occasionally villous towards the top; laminas 12.5–30 mm × 2.5–6 mm, keeled, tapering to a fine point at the apex.
Pedicelled spikelet male or occasionally sterile, 4–7 mm long; inferior glume with an awn 1–4 mm long; anthers 1.3–2.3 mm long.
Loosely caespitose perennial, eventually reddish throughout; culms up to 160 cm high, erect, branched; internodes terete.
