Subspecies

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae > Schizoglossum > Schizoglossum atropurpureum

Characteristics

Stems 16-70 cm tall, rarely branched. Leaves opposite and decussate; lamina 20-40 x 6-30 mm, very variable in shape (oblong, elliptic-oblong, triangular, cordate, ovate or narrowly linear); petiole 1-5 mm long. Inflorescences 5-13 per stem, 5-15-flowered; peduncles 20-60 mm long; pedicels 10-15 mm long. Calyx segments 2.5-4.5 x 1-1.5 mm. Corolla lobes 4.5-7 x 2.5-4 mm, flat to slightly cucullate, dorsally green, ventrally yellowish green striped with purple, completely glabrous. Corona 2-3 mm long, equalling or slightly surpassing the gynostegium, colour unknown but probably greenish; each lobe hollowed at apex, the hollow bordered dorsally by a simple rim and ventrally by an erect 2-or 3-pronged appendage 1-2 mm long; ventral side of corona lobe with two vertical wings flanking the appendage. Anthers with appendages 0.75 mm long, triangular-ovate, appressed against the side of the gynostegial head; corpusculum 0.3-0.42 mm long, with or without translucent flanges (see subsp. atropurpureum); pollinium attachment median; pollinium 0.65-0.87 mm long, compressed ellipsoid with apical crest, the germination zone forming the crest.
