Characteristics

Stems 7-30 cm tall, rarely branched. Leaves opposite and decussate; lamina 23-85 x 4-31 mm, linear, elliptic, lanceolate or triangular; petiole 1-6 mm long. Inflorescences 2-5 per stem, 3-7-flowered; peduncles (0-)8-45 mm long; pedicels 3-12 mm long. Calyx segments 2.5-3.5 x 1 mm. Corolla lobes 6-10 x 3-4.5 mm, usually very strongly replicate and arcuate, varying between yellow, green, greenish brown and white striped brown or pink, completely glabrous. Corona 1.5-2.5 mm long, ± equalling the gynostegium, yellow or white; each lobe isodiametric in dorsal view, straight-topped or bilobed, bearing a short ventral appendage consisting of a pair of several-toothed tongues arising near the apex of the lobe and slightly overtopping it; two shallow wings present on the ventral side of the lobe, joining the outer corners of the appendage to the staminal column. Anthers with appendages 0.5 x 1 mm, broadly reniform, appressed against the side of the gynostegial head or hidden beneath its overhang; corpusculum 0.23-0.4 mm long, not flanged; pollinium attachment median; pollinium 0.55-0.8 mm long, compressed oblong-obtriangular or compressed ellipsoid, with a slight apical crest, the germination zone forming the crest. Gynostegium white or pink. Fruit 5.4-6.5 cm long; seed not seen.
