Characteristics

Stems 25-45 cm tall, unbranched. Leaves opposite and decussate; lamina 40-70 x 2-9 mm, linear to lanceolate; petiole 1-3 mm long. Inflorescences 2-5 per stem, 3-6-flowered; peduncles 7-48 mm long; pedicels 3-8 mm long. Calyx segments 3-4.5 x 1-1.5 mm. Corolla lobes 6-9 x 2.5-3.5 mm, flat, deep red, maroon or purplish brown, lined; dorsal surface usually glabrous, rarely sparsely pubescent, ventral surface glabrous, margin glabrous to sparsely ciliate. Corona 2-3 mm long, exceeding the gynostegium, green or yellow with purple tips; each lobe erect, narrowly triangular in dorsal view, the ventral side with median longitudinal groove. Anthers with appendages 1-1.5 mm long, triangular-ovate, inflexed over but not appressed against the gynostegium; corpusculum 0.3-0.35 mm long, not flanged; pollinium attachment subapical; pollinia 0.45-0.57 mm long, compressed obtriangular, the germination zone extending across the top of the pollinium and having a conspicuously thickened edge. Fruit often developing, 4.5-5.5 cm long; seed 3-3.5 mm long, coma 15-17 mm long.
