Characteristics

Densely branched succulent perennial shrub, 10-20 cm tall, 10-50 cm diameter, internodes short and mostly not visible, stems woody. Leaves gray-green, fused with stem toward their bases to forma short sheath less than 5 mm long, free parts 7-9 mm long, 4-6 mm broad, spreading widely, triquetrous, margins and keels cartilaginous, finely denticulate toward the apex, tip sharply mucronate, epidermis smooth. Flowers solitary, ± 24 mm diameter, calyx lobes 5, shorter than petaloid staminodes, petaloid and filamentous staminodes white, surrounding the central cone of stamens, filaments white, shortly papillate near bases, pollen yellow, filamentous staminodes and stamens overtop stigmas, stigmas 0.4 mm long, top of ovary raised, nectaries in a ring. Fruit 8-10 mm diameter, locules 10, top raised and dome-shaped, with low rims, base shortly funnel-shaped, closing bodies white, medium-sized and not blocking exit of locule completely, valve wings broad, tapering slightly toward their tips, covering membranes complete, without any additional closing device below covering membrane. Seeds pale, longer than tall, almost smooth.
