Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Cyperaceae > Schoenus

Characteristics

Caespitose, phyllopodic perennial graminoid. Not viscous on sheaths. Culms terete, robust, 583-720 x 1.0-1.3 mm. Leaves basal, not channelled directly above sheath, up to % of culm height, margin serrate above sheath and involute, apex acuminate, 2-4, 107-230 x 0.2-1.3 mm. Sheaths ivory coloured throughout, loose, membranaceous at margins, longitudinally striate at base. Ligule membranaceous, relatively long, 2.4-8.4 mm. Inflorescence a pseudolateral spike-like panicle, relatively long, straw-coloured when young, dark grey when past maturity, 42-57 x 5-9 mm, proximal rachis length relatively long, 14-20 mm. Proximal primary inflorescence bracts firm, not channelled, apex acute, widened at base, (22-)33-47(-64) mm long, exceeding length of inflorescence 1.5 times or more, longitudinal veins evident. Proximal and subproximal primary inflorescence bracts with membranaceous extensions at base. Mucro of primary inflorescence bracts long, firm and distinct. Spikes 3, 6.5-30.0 mm long, slightly overlapping. Spikelets lanceolate, 6.2-8.9 x 1.5-2.0 mm, pedicellate, 2-3 spikelets per spike, light reddish-brown incolour. Proximal spikelet prophyll 1-2 per spikelet, often difficult to distinguish from lower glumes, with raised central vein extending to mucro, 3.4-9.2 mm long, prophyll mucro 1.7-2.6 mm long. Rachilla 0.1-4.6 mm long. Glumes 4-7 per spikelet, proximal glume 3.6-6.0 mm long, subproximal glume 2.4-6.5 mm long, glumes with narrow hyaline margin, upper glumes longer than basal ones, apex acute to obtuse. Glume mucros usually relatively short, proximal mucro length 0-1.0 mm, subproximal mucro length 0-2.5 mm. Stamens 2-3 per floret, anthers 1.7-2.3 mm long. Stigmas 3-branched, vestigial stigmas of second and third bisexual floret sometimes observed. Perianth bristles not evident. Nutlet broad elliptic, trigonous, yellowish in colour above, darker red to grey below (nutlets examined might be sterile), 2.3-3.0 x 0.6-1.3 mm. Nutlet beak, 0.8-1.2 mm long, hispid, light yellow.
