Characteristics

Herbs, perennial, scapose, from bulbs. Bulbs perennial, ovoid to globose, composed of free scales, progressively renewed annually. Leaves few, basal. Inflorescences racemose or cymose, 1–many-flowered, sometimes bracteate; bracts none or 1, subtending each flower. Flowers: perianth usually blue or purple, rarely white; tepals distinct to base, each 1-veined; stamens 6; filaments inserted at base of perianth, distinct; anthers dorsifixed, introrse; pistil 1, 3-carpellate; ovary superior, 3-locular, septal nectaries present, ovules 1–10 per locule; style simple. Fruits capsular, 3-lobed, subglobose, dehiscence loculicidal. Seeds 3–30, not winged, globose to ellipsoid, elaiosomes present. x = 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.

Bulb often fibrous at the top. Plants ± robust and flowering with the leaves. Leaves linear to lanceolate, glabrous, usually uniformly green. Scape erect, usually single, glabrous or pubescent. Inflorescence a raceme; pedicels smooth or pubescent, spreading in flower, erect in fruit. Flowers white to blue. Perianth-segments free or united at the base, often with a coloured midrib. Filaments flattened and often united with each other at the base. Ovary sessile or with a short carpophore with 2 or more ovules per locule. Seeds black and flattened to turgid.

Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, many in a raceme which is sometimes corymb-like, each pedicel subtended by a bract. Sepals and petals each 3, free, flat, equal, blue to violet. Stamens 6, free, inserted at base of perianth; anthers dehiscing by slits, introrse. Ovary superior, 3-locular; ovules 1-10 per locule; placentation axile; style filiform, simple; stigma small. Fruit a capsule. Seeds several, angular or globose.
Clump-forming perennials. Bulb tunicate. Leaves all basal, variable liner to ± ovate. Flowers blue, rose or white, in few-to many-flowered terminal erect racemes; ebracteate, or with 1 bract, or with bract and bracteole; segments free or ± connate at base, spreading or ± campanulate, midnerve prominent or obscure. Capsule globose, loculicidal. Seeds Sub-globose, black. spp. c. 80, of temperate Eurasia, tropical and S. Africa. Adventive spp. 2.
