Rhizome horizontal, thick, woody; culms coarse, 1-2 m. tall, triangular, erect, nearly smooth; leaves 30 cm. long or longer, 1-2.5 cm. wide, scabrous, especially oin the veins and margins, coriaceous, rigid, flat or somewhat plicate; sheaths 3-winged, scabrous on the angles, otherwise glabrous; inflorescence paniculate, nar-row, about 3 dm. long; hypogynium-margin densely brown-ciliate, cup-shaped, 3-lobed; achene 2.5-3 mm. long (with high hypogynium 4 mm. long), white, globose or subglobose, shining, smooth, terminated by the conic, pale, more or less deciduous style-base.
