Characteristics

Small or medium-sized dioecious trees. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate, crowded at the apex of the branchlets, petiolate; leaflets opposite, occasionally subopposite, sessile or petiolulate. Male inflorescences axillary or subterminal condensed racemes, sometimes branched. Female inflorescences short, unbranched, with 1(–3) flowers at the tip. Flowers shortly pedicellate; sepals and petals 4–5, imbricate. Male flowers: stamens 10–16(–26); filaments subulate; anthers oblong and dorsifixed; disk saucer-shaped; pistillode absent. Female flowers slightly larger than ♂; staminodes sometimes with reduced apparently sterile anthers; ovary subglobose, immersed in the disk, 2–3(–4)-locular; styles (2–)3(–4), well separated, short and lateral; stigmas capitate. Drupe obovoid-subglobose with fleshy mesocarp; endocarp thick, bony, with (1–)3(–4) ovate opercules at the apex. Seeds (1–)3(–4), obclavate, compressed, with papyraceous brownish testa; cotyledons plano-convex.
