Characteristics

Culms to 50 (–80) cm high; mid-culm internodes hollow. Leaves: pseudopetiole 15–50 mm long; blade lamina obovate to oblanceolate, elliptic to narrowly elliptic or oblong, (8–) 15–27 cm long, (30–) 35–60 (–80) mm wide, glabrous except margins often minutely scabrous mainly towards apex. Infloresences usually 8–18 cm long; primary branches of principal node 5–14 (–17) cm long; primary branches of upper secondary node (when present) 2.5–6.5 cm long; rachises puberulous with uncinate hairs. Male spikelets overtopping female spikelets; glumes unequal in length; lemma 3–5 mm long; anthers 3–3.5 mm long. Female spikelets 4–7.5 mm long; lower glume 7–9-nerved; slightly longer upper glume the length of the spikelet at anthesis, 2-keeled, 7-nerved, with tranverse nervelets; lemma when mature inflated, to 9 mm long.
