Slender, erect, annual herbs 3.5-20 cm high, mostly unbranched. Leaves 1-5 mm long, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, the lower ones reduced and scale-like. Inflorescence a few-flowered cyme; bracts small, ovate-lanceolate to subulate, acuminate. Calyx of 5 segments, each 3.5-5 mm long, 1-1.75 mm broad, lanceolate to oblong, acuminate to acuminate-mucronate, the sides hyaline, joined for 0.5-0.75 mm, strongly keeled or with a wing up to 0.5 mm broad, broadest below the middle; margins and back of keel frequently minutely papillose denticulate. Corolla yellow or 'lemon' (fide Verdoorn); tube 3.75-5 mm long; lobes 2.75-4.5 mm long, 1.25-2 mm broad, ovate-lanceolate to broadly ovate or ovate-oblong, acute or rounded. Filaments 0.75-2.25 mm long, inserted in the corolla-sinuses; anthers 0.75-1.25 mm long, each with a small stipitate apical gland. Style and stigma 3-4.25 mm long, without a stigmatic swelling; stigma large, 2-lobed with broad lobes.
Annual herb, 0.04-0.20 m high, slender to filiform; unbranched or 2-or 3-branched. Leaves 2-12 x 2-10 mm, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, lower ones reduced and scale-like. Flowers in few-flowered cymes, bracteate. Calyx: segments 5, joined for 0.50-0.75 mm, keeled or with wing. Corolla yellow; tube 3.75-5.00 mm long. Stamens inserted in corolla sinuses; anthers with clavate apical glands. Ovary ellipsoid; style without swelling; stigma bilobed, lobes broad. Fruit an ellipsoid capsule. Seeds cubical or subglobose.
Annual herb, 35-200 mm high. Stems slender, erect. Leaves in relatively few pairs, internodes prominent; blade narrowly ovate, 1-5 mm long. Flowers: in few-to many-flowered inflorescences; filaments inserted in corolla sinuses; anthers with a small stipitate apical gland; style without stigmatic swelling, style and stigma 3-4 mm long; corolla with tube 3.75-5.00 mm long, yellow or lemon-coloured; Jan.-Apr.
Calyx with a very short tube; lobes 5, 3–4 (5) mm. long, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, acuminate to mucronate at the apex, winged on the keel, (wing up to 0.4–0.5 mm. broad), with hyaline margins; corolla tube 3–4 (5) mm. long, cylindric or funnel-shaped; lobes 5, 2–4.5 (6) mm. long, ovate-lanceolate to oblong-ovate, subacute or rounded at the apex.
Stamens inserted in the corolla-sinuses; filaments 0.8–1 (2) mm. long; anthers 0.75–1.25 mm. long, linear ellipsoid, with a narrowly clavate apical gland c. 0.12–0.17 mm. long.
Leaves 1–2.5 (5) x 0.5–1.8 mm., lanceolate to narrowly-ovate, acute at the apex, the lower ones reduced and scale-like.
Flowers whitish or lemon yellow to yellow, solitary or in few-flowered cymes, pedicellate; pedicels 1–5 mm. long.
Ovary ellipsoid, 1–1.5 mm. long; style 3–4 mm. long; stigma 0.7–1 mm., oblong bilobed.
Seeds 0.05–0.1 mm. in diam., cubical or subglobose; testa faveolate.
