Characteristics

Annual herb 20–70 cm high.. Stem branched from the base or unbranched, many-noded, nodes becoming more widely spaced towards apex.. Leaves sessile, elliptic to orbicular in outline, (5–)8–14 mm long, 4–14 mm wide, amplexicaul, apex acute, 5 distinct veins beneath.. Inflorescences terminal, of few-to many-flowered dichotomous cymes; pedicels 3–6 mm long, flower of central dichasial cyme sometimes sessile; bracts linear to linear-lanceolate, up to 3.5 mm long, acute.. Flowers 5-merous, orange-yellow.. Calyx lobes lanceolate, elliptic to elliptic-oblong,(7.2–)8–9.6 mm long, 1.6–2.4 mm wide, acute to apiculate, margins hyaline, calyx wings wider above or at the middle.. Corolla tube 8–9.6 mm long; lobes broadly elliptic to obovate, (8.3–)9.6–10.4 mm long, (3.2–)4.8–5.6 mm wide, obtuse.. Filaments inserted in the sinuses of corolla lobes, (1.8–)2–2.7 mm long; anthers (1.7–)2–3.2 mm long, with a minute stipitate apical gland, with or without two minute stipitate basal glands.. Ovary 4.8–6.4 mm long, 1.6–2.4 mm diameter, ellipsoid, style 6.5–8 mm long, secondary swelling placed at 1.3 mm from the base of the style, ± 0.4 mm long; stigma capitate or clavate with two distinct lobes, 0.5–0.6 mm long, 0.3–0.4 mm diameter.. Capsule ellipsoid, 6–6.3 mm long, 2–3.2 mm wide.. Seeds numerous, ± 0.5 mm, surface with continuous ridge-like outgrowths.
More
Erect herbs, simple or branched, up to 60 cm high. Leaves up to 1.8 cm long and 1.5 cm broad, lanceolate or narrowly elliptic-lanceolate to suborbicular-cordate or suborbicular-reniform, rounded or acute, often apiculate-mucronate, somewhat coriaceous, smaller, narrower and more distant in the upper part. Inflorescence few-flowered, lax or compact cymes, terminal, solitary or somewhat corymbose, with very few bracts; bracts ovate-lanceolate to linear or even linear-subulate, erect. Calyx of 5 segments, each 7-11 mm long, 2-5 mm broad, lanceolate to elliptic, acute, mucronate, the sides hyaline, keeled or with a wing up to 0.75 mm broad, broadest below or about the middle. Corolla yellow; tube 5.5-9 mm long; lobes 5.5-11 mm long, 2.5-5.5 mm broad, broadly elliptic to oblong-obovate or ovate-orbicular, rounded, clawed. Filaments 1-4 mm long, inserted in the corolla-sinuses; anthers 2-4.25 mm long, always with a small apical, and sometimes with 2 minute basal glands. Style and stigma 6.5-9.5 mm long, without a stigmatic swelling and then the stigma small, capitate, 2-lobed, or with a swelling near the base and a large clavate stigma with 2 broad, tongue-shaped lobes.
Biennial herb, up to 0.6 m high. Leaves up to 18 x 15 mm, elliptic-lanceolate to subcircular-cordate or subcircular-reniform, upper smaller, more distant. Flowers in lax or compact, few-flowered cymes. Calyx: segments 5, lanceolate to elliptic, keeled or winged. Corolla yellow; tube 5.5-9.0 mm long; clawed. Stamens inserted in corolla sinuses; anthers with apical glands and sometimes 2 basal glands. Ovary ellipsoid; stigmatic swelling absent, stigma small, capitate or stigmatic swelling present near base, stigma large, clavate. Fruit an ellipsoid capsule. Seeds ellipsoid or cubical.
Flowers yellow, in few flowered lax or compact cymes, terminal, solitary or corymbose with very few bracts; bracts ovate-lanceolate to linear or linear-subulate, erect Calyx segments 5, 7–11 x 2–5.5 mm. long, lanceolate to elliptic, acute, margin hyaline, keeled or with a dorsal wing broadest at the middle or near the base.
Ovary ellipsoid, 3.5–4 x 1.5–2 mm.; style 6.5–9.5 mm. long, without a stigmatic swelling and then the stigma small, capitate bilobed, or with a swelling near the base and then a large clavate stigma with 2 broad tongue-shaped lobes.
Leaves sessile; lamina 18 x 15 mm., elliptic-lanceolate to subcircular-cordate or subcircular-reniform, rounded or acute, or sometimes mucronate at the apex, sometimes coriaceous, the upper smaller and more distant, 5-nerved.
Stamens inserted at the corolla sinuses; filaments 1–4 mm. long; anthers narrowly ellipsoid, 2–4.25 mm. long, with a minute apical gland and sometimes with 2 minute basal glands.
Corolla tube 5.5–9 mm. long; lobes 5.5–11 x 2.5–5.5 mm., broadly elliptic to oblong-obovate or obovate-circular, rounded, clawed.
