Characteristics

Annual herb 10–80 cm high.. Stem sometimes branched but usually unbranched.. Leaves oblong-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 5–25 mm long, 2–8 mm wide, increasing in size towards apex, acute or obtuse.. Inflorescences terminal, usually flowers solitary; pedicel 1.5–13 cm long; bracts lanceolate, oblong, 8–18 mm long, 2–4 mm wide, acute.. Flower 5-merous, white, cream or yellow.. Calyx lobes ovate-lanceolate, 7–20 mm long, ± 3 mm wide, acuminate, margin hyaline, papillate on outer surface; wings up to 0.8 mm wide.. Corolla tube ± cylindrical, 10–30 mm long, with distinct swelling at anthers, beset with minute scale-like projections; lobes ovate-lanceolate to elliptic, 5–27 mm long, 3–12 mm wide, acute, beset with minute scale-like projections on the outer side.. Stamens included; filaments inserted on the corolla tube, ± 1.5–2 mm long, sterile hood-like projections on corolla at base of filament; anthers ± 2.8–3 mm long, with narrowly clavate 0.4–0.8 mm long apical glands, with 0.3 mm long stipitate globose basal glands or sometimes these absent.. Ovary ellipsoid, 5.5–8 mm long; style 3.5–9 mm long; stigma ±2 mm long, papillate.. Capsule ovoid to ellipsoid, 7.5–10 mm long, 3–4(–5) mm wide.. Seeds 0.2–0.3 mm, surface minutely reticulate-pitted.. Fig. 4/1–8 (p. 17).

Corolla tube 10–30 x 1–2 mm., subcylindric, the lower portion enlarged in fruit, narrowed around the ovary, widening again from the point of insertion of the filaments, puberulous on the external face; lobes 5–25 x 2–12 mm., ovate-lanceolate, attenuate or apiculate at the apex.
Flowers white, pale cream to yellowish, solitary, terminal, pedicellate; pedicels 1.5–13 cm. long; calyx with 4–5 segments, 7–20 mm. long, lanceolate, acuminate, with a dorsal wing, 0.5–0.6 mm. broad near the middle.
Leaves in 4–8 pairs, 5–25 x 2–8 mm., oblong-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, acute or subobtuse at the apex.
Ovary 5.5–8 mm. long, ellipsoid; style 4–9 mm. long; stigma papillate.
Capsule 7.5–10 mm. long, narrowly ovoid to ellipsoid.
Seeds 0.20–0.25 mm. long, cubical; testa faveolate.
