Sessile spikelet 9–15 mm long, laterally compressed; inferior glume linear, firmly coriaceous with a deeply bifid membranous apex ± as long as the body, 2-keeled above, the keels curving inwards towards the midline below, forming a deep slot between them and obscuring the intercarinal nerves; superior lemma with an awn 4–7 cm long, the column ciliate along the edges of the coils.
Annual 200-600 mm high. Leaf blade 50-300 x 1-3 mm. Inflorescence 30-60 mm long. Sessile spikelet 9-15 mm long; lower glume deeply grooved below, apex deeply 2-toothed; upper lemma awn 40-120 mm long; awn dark brown to black, coiled part ciliate/hairy, upper part scabrid. Pedicelled spikelet 7-15 mm long, awnless.
Annual, up to 0.6 m high. Leaf blades 50-300 mm long, 1-3 mm wide. Spikelets (sessile) 9-15 mm long; lower glume of sessile spikelets deeply grooved below, tip deeply 2-toothed.
Pedicelled spikelet 7–15 mm long, ciliate, the inferior glume with a midnerve and 2–3 conspicuous lateral nerves adjacent to each keel.
Raceme 3–15 cm long, gently curved.
