Characteristics

Culms 60–100 cm high, simple, with nodes conspicuously bearded or glabrous. Leaves: ligule 1–2.5 mm long; blade 15–30 cm long, 2–3 mm wide. Inflorescence a single raceme 7–12 cm long, 12–20-jointed; raceme internodes and pedicels 3.5–4 mm long, with ciliate margins, internodes and pedicels asymmetrical in cross-section with groove along inner or adaxial surface and rounded on outer or abaxial surface. Sessile spikelets lanceolate to narrowly elliptic or narrowly oblong; lower glume 8–10 mm long, grooved or depressed throughout or below middle, 6-veined, glabrous, stiffly coriaceous, apex tapering into bifid linear lobes, with narrow wings especially at apex or without wings; upper glume c. 6–7.5 mm long (not including awn), 3-veined, scabrous on lateral veins and long-ciliate on margins, membranous, winged on keel at apex, with awn to 10 mm long; lower lemma 6–7 mm long, hyaline, apex acute and awnless; lower palea slightly shorter, hyaline; upper lemma c. 5 mm long, hyaline, tapering into two linear lobes, with awn 20–40 mm long; upper palea c. 5 mm long; anthers c. 3 mm long. Pedicellate spikelets lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, c. 8–9 mm long (including tapered apex); lower glume 7-veined, long-ciliate on margins, tapered into short linear apex, bifid or entire; upper glume ± equal, 3-veined, apex tapered, entire; lower lemma c. 6 mm long, palea absent; upper lemma c. 5 mm long; palea c. 5 mm long, anthers to 5 mm long. Caryopsis concave on one side, compressed dorsoventrally.
More
Perennial. Culms erect, wiry, 30–100 cm tall, nodes bearded or glabrous. Leaf sheaths glabrous or hispid with tubercle-based hairs; leaf blades linear, flat, tough, pale green, 10–45 × 0.2–0.7 cm, scabrid, tapering to a filiform apex; ligule 2–3 mm. Raceme 3–12(–18) cm, straight or gently curved; rachis internodes and pedicels stoutly linear, 3.5–5 mm. Sessile spikelet yellowish green, 7–9 mm; lower glume narrowly oblong, deeply grooved between keels in lower part, with 6 prominent laterally placed intercarinal veins, inner veins anastomosing toward apex, apex scarious, 1/4–1/3 glume length, shortly 2-toothed; upper glume with straight, 7–13 mm awn; awn of upper lemma stout, 1.7–3.5 cm, column brown, ciliolate along spiral, limb pallid. Pedicelled spikelet usually flushed purple, 7–10 mm, lower glume conspicuously 7-veined, margins ciliate. Fl. and fr. Jul–Oct.
Tufted perennial; culms 30–100 cm. high, wiry.. Leaf-blades flat, 5–40 cm. long, 2–7 mm. wide, glaucous, long-acuminate to a filiform tip.. Raceme 3–12 cm. long, gently curved.. Sessile spikelet 6–10 mm. long, laterally compressed; lower glume narrowly oblong-elliptic, thinly coriaceous with a membranous tip up to 1/4 its length, 2-keeled, concave between the keels, lyrately nerved with 2–3 closely spaced nerves adjacent to each keel; upper lemma with an awn 2–4 cm. long, minutely ciliolate along the spiral.. Pedicelled spikelet lanceolate, 6–10 mm. long, purplish, ciliate; lower glume with a midnerve and 2–3 conspicuous lateral nerves adjacent to each keel.. Fig. 176.
Sessile spikelet 6–10 mm long, laterally compressed; inferior glume narrowly oblong-elliptic, thinly coriaceous with a shallowly bifid membranous apex up to 1/3 the length of the body, 2-keeled, concave between the keels, lyrately nerved with 2–3 closely spaced nerves adjacent to each keel; superior lemma with an awn 2–4 cm long, the column minutely ciliolate along the edges of the coils.
Pedicelled spikelet 6–10 mm long, ciliate, the inferior glume with a midnerve and 2–3 conspicuous lateral nerves adjacent to each keel.
Caespitose wiry perennial up to 100 cm high; basal leaf sheaths glabrous or at most thinly pubescent.
Racemes 3–12 cm long, gently curved.
