Characteristics

Coarse perennial herb, stems several from a stout woody stock, c. 600 mm-1.5 m long, ± erect, simple or very loosely and sparingly branched below the inflorescence, pubescent, hairs 0.4-lmm long, patent or slightly recurved but then without underlying short strongly recurved hairs, closely leafy at least on upper part. leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves 20-75 x 2.5-20 mm (axillary and uppermost leaves smaller), elliptic, apex acute, callose-tipped, base narrowed, petiolar in large leaves, margins entire or with up to 9 pairs of minute coarse teeth, glandular-punctate, hairs 0.3-0.8 mm long scattered on both surfaces. Inflorescence composed of few-flowered (up to c. 20 flowers, but mostly up to 10), congested racemes arranged in small crowded corymbose panicles c. 20-40 mm in diam., these further arranged in a big loose panicle, branchlets up to c. 150 mm long, sparsely leafy. Bract adnate to pedicel and base of calyx tube, blade of lowermost 1.5-2 x 0.8-lmm, elliptic, apex ± obtuse, deeply concave, ± embracing calyx, strongly keeled with broad pale membranous margins, hairs c. 0.2-0.25 mm long all over margins and keels or keels only. Pedicel (lowermost) 1-2 mm long. Calyx 1.4-1.8 mm long, campanulate, subequallv 5-lobed, lobes 0.5-0.7 mm long, acute to obtuse, minutely glandular on anticous side, hairs 0.15-0.25 mm long on margins and keels or nearly confined to margins. Corolla tube 1.2-1.5 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 2.7-4 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-1.4 x 0.7-1.1 mm, anticous lobe 1.5-2.1 x 0.7-1 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-1.8 mm long, anticous filaments 1.4-2.2 mm long, all anthers well exerted. Stigma and style 1.4-2 mm long, style puberulous. Ovary c. 0.7 x 0.3 mm. Cocci 1.5-1.8 x 0.6-0.8 mm, ± oblong, almost smooth, brown. The main flowering time is between December and March, though flowers can possibly be found in any month.
