Characteristics

Glabrous perennials; stems prostrate, woody, rooting at nodes. Leaves sessile, attenuate towards base. Inflorescences with flowers in very condensed axillary racemes or solitary in leaf axils, bracteolate; pedicels not articulate. Sepals adnate to ovary. Corolla tubular, completely slit adaxially, without pouch; lobes ±equal, without wings or auricles, reddish brown outside, usually whitish inside. Stamens free. Ovary inferior, 2-locular; indusium ±horizontal; ovules numerous, in 2 rows in each locule. Fruit fleshy, tardily dehiscent or indehiscent. Seeds numerous, biconvex, with swollen mucilaginous wing. Embryo spathulate.
