Species

Bryophytes > Hypnales > Sematophyllaceae > Sematophyllum

Characteristics

A close bark-epiphyte, especially on decayed stumps, forming compact, dark green to yellowish, shining mats, usually abundantly fertile. Prostrate stems 1-4 cm long, sparingly or pinnately branched; the branches ascending; the leaves often regular round the ascending stems, but at the apex, especially of horizontal stems and branches, more or less secund upward; leaves spreading when moist, ascending when dry, lanceolate-subulate, entire, very concave except toward the apex, which is flat; the margin ascending or somewhat flattened outward or reflexed toward the base; nerve absent; alar group of about three large cells, with a few small quadrate cells in three or four rows above them up the margin; other cells linear-rhomboid, pellucid, smooth. Some leaves narrower than others. Perichaetium rooting; per. leaves few, like the stem leaves, not closely sheathing. Seta red, smooth, slender, 5-7 mm long; capsule small, horizontal or somewhat hanging, oval; the lid wider, rostrate from a convex base; calyptra cucullate, rostrate, long, covering the capsule at first. Capsule on maturity constricted below the very wide mouth. Outer perichaetal teeth usually inflexed, thick, and having a line of about twelve prominent papillose mamillae along the central line on the inner surface; processes as high as the teeth, keeled, papillose below, with high basal membrane and single cilia between. Spores large.
More
Plants small, golden green to pale green. Stems creeping, freely branched, central strand absent. Pseudoparaphyllia absent. Stem and branch leaves similar, erect, complanate, ovate-lanceolate, plane, 1.20-1.35 mm long, 0.25-0.47 mm wide; margins entire; apex acuminate; costae absent; laminal cells linear, smooth,45-74 µm long, 5.0-8.5 µm wide; alar cells enlarged, not inflated, sometimes colored, consisting of 3-4 rows. Asexual propagule absent. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves erect, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, plane, 1.0-1. long, 0.25-0.47 mm wide, apex acuminate to acute; costae short and double or absent, laminal cells linear, quadrate near base, smooth, 75-80 µm long, ca. 9-13 µm wide; alar cells poorly differentiated or absent. Setae elongate, smooth, ca. 0.6 cm long; capsules erect, ovoid-cylindric, 0.7-1.0 mm long, constricted below mouth when dry; exothecial cells collenchymatous; annulus present, operculum obliquely long-rostrate; exostome with zig-zag line, cross-striate below, coarsely papillose above, trabeculate at back; endostome with high basal membrane, keeled, cilia not seen. Spores spherical, finely papillose, 12-20 µm across. Calyptrae cucullate, naked, smooth.
Plants dark green to yellowish. Stems creeping, 10-40 mm long, branches ascending. Leaves homomallous at stem tips, concave, ovate-lanceolate; apex acuminate; costa absent or short and double. Upper laminal cells linear-rhomboidal or fusiform, smooth; alar cells usually 3, bordered by quadrate cells above. Capsule horizontal to pendulous, oval, constricted below mouth when dry; peristome double; endostome with high basal membrane, keeled processes and single cilia.
