Characteristics

Leaves alternate (by reduction), subopposite or opposite; leaf-lamina 7–23 × 2–5 mm., narrowly elliptic or elliptic-oblong, slightly succulent, with petiole up to 6 mm. long, scarious-winged at the base.

Perianth segments united for c. 1/3–1/2 their length, equal, narrowly triangular, acute, each with a dorsal apiculus 1–2 mm. long from just below the apex, pink or purple inside, green outside.
Stems up to 50 cm. long, pale coloured, coarsely papillose becoming rough, not rooting at the nodes.
Seeds 2-several in each loculus, rugose, with more than 20 transverse wrinkles.
Branching semi-prostrate fleshy annual herb sometimes slightly woody at base.
Ovary of 2 carpels, 2-locular, with 2 styles.
Flowers solitary, up to 8 mm. long, sessile.
Fruit pointed, the lower part thickened.
