Characteristics

Stems glabrescent or sparsely hispid. Tendrils 2–3-branched. Leaves ovate, cordate at  base; lamina 45–70 mm long, 50–80 mm wide, 3–5-lobed; lobes triangular to lanceolate, dentate, acute or acuminate, sparsely hispid. Male racemes 10–20-flowered;  peduncle 25–90 mm long; pedicels 3–5 mm long, glandular hairy; calyx lobes  subulate, 1 mm long, glandular hairy; corolla lobes ovate, 3 mm long, sparsely  glandular hairy outside, greenish-white. Female flowers in 7–8-flowered heads;  peduncle 5–15 mm long; ovary ovoid, attenuate, 2–3.5 mm long, spinose with soft, barbed spines and glandular hairs. Fruit ovoid, 7–12 mm long, 4–7 mm diam., armed with barbed soft spines, green; pedicel 25–30 mm long. Seeds ovate, 5–7 mm long.
