Characteristics

Inflorescence many-flowered, 4–12(16) x 1.5–2.5 cm., spicate or racemose with flowers closely and tightly arranged so as to obscure the inflorescence, axis and base of flowers, or more loosely arranged showing main axis and base of at least lower flowers.

Erect, robust perennial or undershrub to 1 m. or more tall, densely grey to silvery, appressed lanate almost throughout; stems many from a woody base, up to 6.5 mm. thick below, simple or branched usually above, densely leafy.
Leaves subverticillate, 15–40 x 1–2.5(5) mm., linear to linear-lanceolate, spreading, strict or laterally arcuate, with tufts of smaller leaves in axils, entire, margins slightly revolute, midrib prominent beneath.
Capsule 4–5 x c. 4 mm., shortly cylindric to subglobose, rounded at apex, sparsely pilose.
Flowers pink to lilac or mauve-pink with darker pink or mauve throat, pedicellate or not.
Calyx 6–10 mm. long; lobes 3–5.5 mm. long, linear-triangular.
Fertile anther thecae 2–3 mm. long, cylindric or ellipsoid.
Bracteoles 4–10 mm. long, linear or linear-lanceolate.
