Characteristics

Tufted perennial; culms 45–120 cm. high.. Leaf-blades usually convolute, 9–15 cm. long, 1.5–2 mm. wide.. Panicle 6–15 cm. long, composed of 4–8 racemes; racemes loose, 4–7 cm. long, containing up to 7 pairs of spikelets, the pedicelled either similar to the sessile or reduced to a barren pedicel.. Spikelets lanceolate, 5–6.5 mm. long; callus rounded, bearing a silvery corona of hairs 1/3–3/4 the length of the spikelet; glumes thinly coriaceous, pilose on the back; upper lemma entire, with a straight awn 3–6 mm. long, or sometimes awnless.
