Characteristics

Shrubs or herbs with indumentum of stellate and simple hairs mixed, or of stellate tomentum only, sometimes glabrescent. Leaves alternate, petiolate, 3–7-angled or-lobed, palmately nerved, crenate-dentate, crenate or serrate; stipules setaceous to triangular-lanceolate. Inflorescence composed of extra-axillary or leaf-opposed pedunculate umbelliform cymes from upper axils; bracts short, resembling the stipules. Sepals 4, free, oblong to lanceolate, deciduous. Petals 4, oblanceolate to obovate, without glands. Stamens numerous with nodose filaments, the outer often sterile and moniliform; androgynophore obsolete. Ovary 4–5-locular; ovules numerous; style slender, glabrous, with 4–5-toothed stigma. Ovary 4–5-locular but septa sometimes evanescent apically; ovules numerous. Capsule ellipsoid, globose or oblong-ovoid, loculicidally 4–5-valved, covered with rigid bristles.
