Densely tufted perennial; culms erect, 30-60 cm. high; lower sheaths crowd-ed, becoming reddish-brown with age, conspicuously and densely ciliate with long hairs on the margins, the culm sheaths shorter than the internodes, glabrous; blades flat or folded, 10-30 cm. long, 2-4 mm. wide, tapering toward the base, narrower than the mouth of the sheath, papillose or papillose-ciliate on the mar-gins toward the base; panicles mostly 8-12 cm. long, open, the short branches verticillate, spreading to reflexed, bearing 1-3 spikelets; spikelets 3-4 mm. long; first glume narrow, acuminate, about half as long as the spikelet, the second much broader, acute, as long as the lemma.
