Characteristics

Spikelets 1.7–2.4 mm long, lightly or deeply suffused with purple; glumes subequal, c. 1/2 the length of the spikelet, ovate, 1-nerved, obtuse to subacute (sometimes apiculate) at the apex; lemma almost as long as the spikelet (slightly exceeded by the palea), distinctly 3-nerved, elliptic-ovate, subacute at the apex; palea similar to the lemma but 2-nerved; rhachilla shortly produced, 1/5–3/5 the length of the lemma, glabrous, sunk between the close-set keels of the palea; anthers 3, 1.1–1.4 mm long.

Densely caespitose perennial, the culms arising above a cushion of old leaf sheaths; culms up to 35 cm tall, erect, unbranched; basal leaf sheaths firmly chartaceous, glabrous, terete, strongly ribbed, eventually disintegrating into a cushion of coarse fibres; leaf laminas 2.5–16 cm long, involute-setaceous, glabrous on the surface, smooth on the margins, obtuse at the apex.
Panicle 3–4.5 cm long, narrowly ovate to ovate; the primary branches not in whorls but sometimes in clusters, smooth, eglandular, with a yellow glabrous pulvinus in the axils, the spikelets gathered into clusters at the distal end.
