Tufted perennial 3–10 dm, with erect slender culms; lvs 1–3 dm, very narrow, involute, crowded toward the base; panicle cylindric, 8–25 × 1–4 cm, its branches regularly whorled, spreading or ascending, 1–3 cm, racemiform, bearing scattered, ± secund, bronze-brown spikelets 2.5–3.7 mm on short (mostly under 1 mm) pedicels in the distal half; first glume lanceolate, acute or obtuse, 1.2–3 mm; second glume acute, about equaling the lemma. Pine-barrens of the coastal plain; se. Va. to Fla. and Tex. (S. gracilis)
