Characteristics

Perennials, fairly robust, erect, caespitose, rhizomatous. Flowering culms to 95 cm high. Leaves: basal leaf sheath margins glabrous; ligule a fringe of hairs, to 0.2 mm long (with marginal hairs to 4 mm long); blade flat, linear, to 16 cm long, to 3.5 mm wide, with scaberulous margins. Inflorescences paniculate, linear, open to contracted and spiciform, 11–13 cm long; primary branches solitary, longer than adjacent internodes, spreading or appressed at apex of inflorescence, spikelet-bearing throughout (except at extreme base), with spikelets loosely spaced and fairly even. Spikelets pedicellate, 2–2.3 mm long; pedicel 0.3–1.5 mm long. Glumes lanceolate; lower glume 1.1–1.5 mm long, acute, without nerves; upper glume slightly shorter than spikelet, to 1.8 mm long. Lemma lanceolate, to 2.3 mm long, acute, 1-nerved. Palea subequal to lemma; entire. Anthers 3, to 1 mm long. Grain not seen.
