Characteristics

Ephemerals, erect, caespitose. Flowering culms to 60 cm high. Leaves: basal leaf sheath margins ciliolate (with rigid hairs to 1 mm long); ligule a fringe of hairs, 0.1–0.2 mm long; blade flat or folded or involute, linear, 3–17 cm long, 2–4 mm wide, with tuberculate margins. Inflorescences paniculate, ovate, open, 3–17 cm long; primary branches whorled at the lowermost panicle node and at all branches except terminally, equalling or longer than adjacent internodes, spreading or divaricate, without spikelets in the lower quarter or spikelets concentrated at the branch apices, with spikelets loosely spaced and fairly even. Spikelets pedicellate, to 1.9 mm long; pedicel 0.8–1.2 mm long. Glumes: lower glume lanceolate, 0.7–0.8 mm long, acute, without nerves; upper glume lanceolate, ±equalling spikelet, 1.4–1.9 mm long. Lemma elliptic, to 1.9 mm long, obtuse, 1-nerved. Palea slightly shorter than lemma, entire. Anthers 3, to 0.2 mm long. Grain lenticulately elliptic, biconvex, to 1.5 mm long, to 0.9 mm wide, to 0.3 mm thick, smooth, pale brown. Embryo ±half as long as grain.
