Sporobolus natalensis T.Durand & Schinz

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Sporobolus

Characteristics

Perennials, erect, caespitose. Flowering culms 60–150 cm high. Leaves: basal leaf sheath margins glabrous; ligule a ciliate membrane, to 0.4 mm long; blade flat or folded, linear, 25–50 cm long, 2–4 mm wide, with smooth margins. Inflorescences paniculate, pyramidal, open to contracted and loosely spiciform, 20–30 cm long; primary branches solitary, equalling or longer than adjacent internodes, appressed, erect or spreading, spikelet-bearing throughout, with spikelets loosely spaced and fairly even. Spikelets pedicellate, 1.6–2.3 mm long; pedicel 0.7–1.5 mm long. Glumes: lower glume oblong, 0.5–0.8 mm long, obtuse, without nerves; upper glume lanceolate, at least half spikelet length, 0.8–1.3 mm long. Lemma narrowly ovate, 1.6–2.3 mm long, acute, 1-nerved. Palea subequal to lemma, entire. Anthers 3, 0.8–1 mm long. Grain elliptic or obovate, quadrangular, 0.7–0.8 mm long, to 0.6 mm wide, to 0.4 mm thick, reticulate, brown. Embryo less than half as long as grain.
More
Tufted perennial 550-1450 mm high; obvious rhizomes absent; lower leaf sheaths papery. Leaf blade 250-500 x 2-4 mm. Inflorescence fairly dense, branches numerous, not whorled, somewhat contracted to spreading. Spikelet 1.6-2.3 mm long; glumes unequal; lower glume 1/3-1/2 as long as spikelet, apex irregularly toothed or erose, nerveless; upper glume 1/2-2/3 as long as spikelet, apex subacute to acute; lemma as long as spikelet, narrowly ovate; anther 0.8-1.0 mm long.
Tufted perennial, 0.55-1.45 m high. Leaf blade 250-500 x 2-4 mm. Inflorescence a fairly dense panicle, branches many, not whorled, contracted or sometimes spreading. Spikelet 1.6-2.3 mm long, laterally compressed, awnless, disarticulating above glumes; glumes 1-nerved; lower glume 1/3-1/2 spikelet length; upper glume 1/2-2/3 as long as spikelet. Floret 1; lemma similar in texture to glumes, membranous, often shining, 1-3-nerved. Flowering time Dec.-Apr.
Perennial, tufted, up to 1.4 m high. Leaf blades 250-500 mm long, 2-4 mm wide. Spikelets 1.6-2.3 mm long. Panicle fairly dense, branches numerous, not whorled, contracted or sometimes spreading; lower glume a third to half the spikelet length; upper glume half to two-thirds the spikelet length.
