Characteristics

Ephemerals, erect, caespitose. Flowering culms to 40 cm high. Leaves: basal leaf sheath margins ciliolate (with rigid hairs to 1 mm long); ligule a fringe of hairs, to 0.1 mm long; blade folded or involute, linear, to 10 cm long, to 2.5 mm wide, with tuberculate margins. Inflorescences paniculate, irregular, open, to 12 cm long; primary branches whorled at the lowermost panicle node and at all branches except terminally, equalling or longer than adjacent internodes, spreading or divaricate, without spikelets in the lower quarter, with spikelets loosely spaced and fairly even. Spikelets pedicellate, 1.2–1.5 mm long; pedicel 0.5–0.9 mm long. Glumes: lower glume elliptic or lanceolate, 0.6–0.75 mm long, acute, without nerves; upper glume lanceolate, ±equalling spikelet, 1.2–1.5 mm long. Lemma lanceolate, 1.1–1.5 mm long, acute, 1-nerved. Palea slightly shorter than lemma, bifid. Anthers 3, 0.3–0.8 mm long. Grain oblong, trigonous, to 0.8 mm long, to 0.5 mm wide, to 0.3 mm thick, wrinkled, pale brown. Embryo less than half as long as grain.
