Characteristics

Perennials, erect, densely caespitose. Flowering culms to 60 cm high. Leaves: basal leaf sheath margins ciliate; ligule a ciliate membrane, 0.5–0.8 mm long; blade flat, linear, to 14 cm long, to 6 mm wide, with sparsely scabrous margins. Inflorescences paniculate, irregular, open, 10–16 cm long, with spikelets ±clustered on branches; primary branches whorled at the lowermost panicle node, not all whorled, equalling or longer than adjacent internodes, spreading or divaricate, without spikelets in the lower quarter or spikelets concentrated at the branch apices, with spikelets loosely spaced and fairly even. Spikelets contracted about secondary branches, subsessile or pedicellate, 1–1.4 mm long; pedicel 0.5–1.2 mm long. Glumes: lower glume linear or elliptic, to 0.5 mm long, acute or obtuse, without nerves; upper glume lanceolate, ±equalling spikelet, 1–1.4 mm long. Lemma elliptic, 1–1.4 mm long, obtuse, prominently 1-nerved. Palea slightly shorter than lemma, entire. Anthers 3, 0.2–0.4 mm long. Grain oblong, quadrangular, to 0.7 mm long, to 0.5 mm wide, to 0.3 mm thick, honeycombed, brown. Embryo less than half as long as grain.
