Characteristics

Flowering culms to 30 cm high. Leaves: ligule a dense fringe of hairs, to 1 mm long; blade flat, 0.5–10 cm long, 1–5 mm wide, with smooth margins. Inflorescences linear, contracted and spiciform, 0.5–4 cm long; primary branches solitary, equalling or longer than adjacent internodes, appressed uniformly to axis, spikelet-bearing throughout. Spikelets subsessile, to 3.5 mm long. Glumes carinate, with midnerve scabrous (ciliate on keel); lower glume lanceolate, to 3 mm long, acute; upper glume elliptic, slightly shorter than the spikelet, to 2.5 mm long. Lemma elliptic, 2–3.5 mm long, entire, acuminate, glabrous. Palea entire. Anthers 3, to 0.6 mm long. Stigmas white. Grain elliptic or obovate, subterete, to 1 mm long, to 0.4 mm wide.
