Characteristics

Perennials, erect, caespitose. Flowering culms 40–100 cm high. Leaves: basal leaf sheath margins glabrous; ligule a ciliate membrane, to 0.4 mm long; blade flat or involute, filiform or linear, 7–25 cm long, 0.5–3 mm wide, with smooth margins. Inflorescences paniculate, irregular, open, 14–30 cm long; primary branches solitary, equalling or longer than adjacent internodes, spreading or appressed at apex of inflorescence, spikelet-bearing throughout, with spikelets loosely spaced and fairly even. Spikelets pedicellate, to 1.6 mm long; pedicel 0.2–3 mm long. Glumes: lower glume elliptic, to 0.6 mm long, obtuse, without nerves; upper glume lanceolate, at least half spikelet length, to 1.5 mm long. Lemma lanceolate, to 1.6 mm long, acute, 1-nerved. Palea subequal to lemma, entire. Anthers usually 2 or 3, to 1 mm long. Grain obovate, quadrangular, to 0.8 mm long, to 0.6 mm wide, to 0.4 mm thick, reticulate, brown. Embryo ±half as long as grain.
