Coarse, densely white-woolly biennial 3–10 dm; lvs lanceolate to oblong, 4–10 cm, conspicuously serrate; verticils several, many-fld, the sharp cal-lobes distinctly protruding from the dense pubescence; cor red, 15–20 mm; 2n=30. Native of Europe, rarely intr. in our range. June–Aug.

Pastures and hedgebanks, especially on limestone soils. A very rare native of Britain, it is only found in Oxford, though is common in Europe.
