Characteristics

Perennial succulent; stems erect, ± 150 x 15 mm, densely pubescent to ± glabrous, green to grey-green, 4-angled, obtusely tuberculate. Flowers 1-5; pedicels up to 65 mm long. Sepals up to 10 mm long. Corolla rotate, 40-140 mm in diam., pubescent, red to purplish black, deeply lobed; lobes spreading to reflexed, 25-55 x 15-35 mm, usually shiny with transverse rugulosities and pale yellow transverse markings. Corona 6-12 mm in diam., purplish black, variable; outer lobes ascending, oblong, ± 5 mm long, longitudinally channelled; inner lobes 6-7 mm long, basally incumbent on anthers, then laterally flattened to form a broad ascending wing with a recurved inner horn.

Corolla 50-140 mm diam., ± rotate; inside usually dull red to purple-black, with faint yellow transverse lines on rugulosities, sometimes smooth and shiny purple-black all over, densely hairy on united central part and on bases of lobes to nearly glabrous (except towards margins of lobes); lobes 25-55 mm long, 15-35 mm broad at base, spreading to reflexed. Corona: inner lobes usually uniformly dark purple.
