Characteristics

Tender herb with procumbent or weakly ascending stems up to c. 40 cm long; internodes glabrous or with 1-2 lines of hairs. Leaves all petiolate; lamina 0.3-1.8 x 0.3-1.4 cm, ovate to broadly ovate, apex acute, shortly apiculate, base ± cordate, glabrous or with a few scattered hairs, midrib and main veins fairly conspicuous, the latter anastomosing near the margin and producing a submarginal nerve, petiole up to 1.7 cm long, pilose near the base, glabrescent above. Flowers solitary and axillary towards the ends of the branches; pedicels up to 1.8 cm long, slender, with a few sparse hairs or glabrous. Sepals 4, 3-4 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, apex acute or shortly acuminate, with a few long hairs outside and at the margins, margins scarious. Petals absent or represented by vestigial teeth between the stamens. Stamens 4, filaments swollen at the base, c. 1 mm long. Ovary ellipsoid, (2)4-ovulate; styles 2, 0.75 mm long, slender. Capsule ellipsoid, somewhat shorter than the persistent calyx, opening at the apex by 4 valves. Seeds 1-4, dark brown, c. 1.75 x 1.25 mm, oblong-ellipsoid, somewhat flattened; testa verrucose-papillose.
