Densely tufted perennial, the basal sheaths pubescent; culms 100–150 cm. high.. Leaf-blades flat or folded, 10–40 cm. long, 2–11 mm. wide, scabrid, glabrous.. Inflorescence of (2–)3–8 racemes, each 8–13 cm. long, the rhachis-margins ciliate.. Spikelets narrowly elliptic, 3–4.5 mm. long; lower glume minute or suppressed; upper glume 1/2 to almost as long as the spikelet, finely acuminate to shortly awned; lower lemma broadly rounded to flat across the back, 7-nerved, with rounded or weakly keeled sides, the awn 1–3 mm. long (or some of the spikelets awnless).
