Characteristics

Leaves 18–45 cm. long, 2–5-jugate; petiole 2.7–9(11) cm. long; leaflet-lamina 5–13(16) x 2–6(8.5) cm., ovate, obovate or elliptic, apex obtuse or acute or even apiculate, base cuneate or rounded and slightly asymmetric, margins entire or rarely toothed; superior surface glabrous, sometimes puberulous on the nerves, inferior surface minutely tomentose to velvety or glabrous, frequently with small glands on each side of the midrib near the base; petiolules very short or up to 1 cm. in the lateral leaflets even reaching 4.5 cm. in the terminal leaflet.

A slender tree. It grows 15 m high. The trunk and branches are usually crooked. The bark is pale grey. The leaves are 18-45 cm long and divided 2 to 5 times. The leaflet blade is 5-13 cm long by 2-6 cm wide. They are oval and slightly unequal. There are hairs underneath. The flowers are in a loose panicle at the ends of branches. The flowers are pink and droop. The fruit are long pods. The seeds are 7 mm by 20-30 mm including the wing.
Corolla funnel shaped, with a pinkish tube 30–40 mm. long, showing red streaks on the throat and along the lower corolla lobes, puberulous outside, glabrous inside except in a band opposite to staminode; corolla lobes c. 20 mm. in diam. more or less circular, lighter coloured than the tube.
Inflorescence a lax, terminal, many-flowered panicle 15–48 cm. long, pubescent to tomentose or glabrescent; flowers appearing before the leaves; pedicels 4–12 mm. long; bracts 3–4 mm. long, oblong.
Drooping ample panicles of pink or purplish and darker streaked flowers 1-2 in. long; flowering in the dry season usually while leafless.
Calyx 5–8(10) mm. long campanulate, slightly 5-lobed, or almost truncate tomentose outside mainly on the lower half.
Stamen-filaments 6–15 mm. long; anthers 2 mm. long; staminode 1.5 mm. long.

Environment

It is a tropical plant. It grows in wooded Savannah and the drier Sahel. It can be on dry rocky sites and termite mounds. In southern Africa it grows from 60-1,500 m altitude. It can grow in arid places.
