Weak perennial or annual, up to 0.6 m tall. Leaves linear, rolled, thread-like, often curved, scabrid; ligule a fringe of hairs (ligule in Stipa capensis a fringed membrane). Inflorescence a narrow, interrupted panicle. Spikelets 9-12 mm long (excluding awns), 1-flowered; glumes unequal; lemma awn solitary, up to 20 mm long, bent, not plumose but with long stiff hairs at base of twisted column, with articulation between apex of lemma and base of column.
