Perennial; robust to slender shrub or dwarf shrub; up to 2 m high; rhizomes long and strong; or densely tufted; plants glabrous and smooth; except for upper and basal leaf sheaths; which are appressed woolly hairy. Culms sprawling to erect; branches usually fascicled from nodes; rarely solitary. Leaf blades 60-100 mm long; setaceous; break off early; leaving sheaths; and exposing upper part of internode; which is usually dark; with characteristic banded appearance. Flowers: panicle elongate; contracted; interrupted; with spikelets clustered; spikelets 15-30 mm long; including awns; glumes straw-coloured; upper glume 10-14 mm long; lemma articulation at ± middle of lemma; a short; twisted beak present; all 3 awns plumose; callus 1.5 mm long; with naked; pungent apex.
