Small, erect, stiffly branched, rigid shrublets, 0.3 m tall. Branches woolly when young, becoming glabrous with age. Leaves imbricate, ascending or recurved, not twisted, linear-subulate, pungent mucronate, involute, up to 6.0 mm long and 1.5 mm wide at base; abaxial surface glabrous, with a prominent midrib, at the base two conspicuous, lateral, parallel veins, which form the thickened margin in the upper part of the leaf, pitting in between the veins obvious in dried specimens, obscure when fresh; persistent for 3 seasons. Synflorescences of 3-12 capitula in terminal clusters, individual capitula distinct, side shoots developing from below inflorescence. Capitula homogamous, discoid, 1-flowered. Involucral bracts in several rows, the outer shorter, somewhat leaf-like, the inner longer, rich red-copper or light straw-coloured, stiff, taper-pointed, almost as long as the florets, up to 8 mm long. Florets bisexual; white, rarely purple, deeply lobed; corolla lobes narrow, slightly spreading, much longer than those of other species. Stamens 5, apical appendages protruding from the corolla tube for about half their length, basally tailed. Style base slightly swollen. Nectaries present. Cypselas glabrous, with very faint, broad ribs, slightly rugulose between the ribs. Pappus setae 18, stiff, well developed, widened and fused at the base with a few barbs and plumose from near the base, plumes ascending to inclined, delicate and relatively long in lower half, shortening upwards; tips slightly tufted.
