Characteristics

Rosulate, with a short, stout axis vertical to the rosette. Leaves numerous, prostrate, up to c. 180 x 80 mm, margin crenate, base cuneate, decurrent on a short petiole, blade green above and below, thick-textured and villous, petiolode up to 15 mm. Inflorescences arising at junction of petiolode and petiole, 1-14-flowered. Peduncles up to c. 250 mm; pedicels 17 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts often absent, when present, linear, c. 2 mm long. Calyx divided to the base into 5 linear segments, 4-7 x 1.5 mm. Corolla 32-50 mm long, medium violet with a white patch at the base of the lower lip which is patterned with 3, sometimes 5-7, deep violet lines, glandular-pilose out-side, glabrous inside except for glandular pubescence around the mouth; tube cylindric, 13-20 mm long, 3 mm in diam., strongly curved and later-ally compressed in the mouth; limb more conspicuous than the tube, strongly oblique, upper lip of 2 oblong to suborbicular lobes, 10-14 x 11 mm, lower lip 20-25 mm long, 30-36 mm broad, lobes oblong to suborbicular, 12-14 x 9-13 mm. Stamens arising in upper third of corolla tube; filaments c. 4 mm long, curved and slightly thickened about the curve, deep violet, sparsely glandular below the anthers; anther lobes2 mm long, deep violet. Ovary c. 9 mm long, appressed-pubescent, usually eglandular; style terete, c. 2 mm long, white, hairy as the ovary; stigma divided into an upper and a lower lobe. Capsule c. 30-50 mm long, 2.  in diam. Seeds 0.6-0.7 mm long, reticulate.
