Characteristics

Corolla 15–17 mm. long; tube 7 mm. long, c. 5 mm. diam., slightly swollen on the upper side at the base and ventricose below towards the mouth, glandular-pubescent and pale violet outside glabrous and white inside in the lower half, bearded with pointed unicellular hairs on the roof and sides in the upper half, with a median yellow bar on the floor and an irregular deep violet (sometimes broken) bar on each side of it; upper lobes 4×4 mm.; lower lip 10 mm. long, the palate white; median and lateral lobes 5×5 mm.; all the lobes pale violet on both sides, almost glabrous outside, densely papillose all over the surface inside.

Inflorescences 3–4 at base of lamina, many-flowered; peduncle 10 cm., spreading-pubescent, a few of the hairs glandular; pedicels c. 15 mm., glandular-pubescent; bracts usually linear, green, c. 8 × 1 mm. (occasionally broader and more leafy in the cultivated plant).
Ovary 5 mm., cylindrical, densely aprressed-pubescent; style 5 mm., glabrous in the upper part, stigma with a central horizontal groove and thus almost two-lipped but also very slightly folded forwards about the vertical axis.
Stamens arising in lower third of the tube (about 1.5 mm. above base); filaments 2.5 mm., glabrous, rather thick; anthers cohering face to face, buff-coloured, lobes 0.75 mm. long, disk annular.
Leaf solitary, about 15×15 cm. at flowering, with erect hairs on both surfaces, cordate at the base, crenulate.
Calyx pubescent, divided to the base into 5 linear segments 4 mm. long.
Capsule 30–40 × 1 mm., glabrescent.
Seeds 0.5 mm. long, reticulate.
