Characteristics

Leaves opposite, more or less equal; petiole very variable in length, up to 50 mm. in the lower part of large plants, pubescent; lamina up to c. 90 × 45 mm., more or less elliptic (sometimes somewhat oblique), acute at the apex, more or less abruptly narrowed at the base, thinly pubescent on both surfaces, margins entire; lateral nerves c. 10 pairs, rather evenly spaced about 5 mm. apart, ascending.

Corolla c. 20 mm. long, deep blue; tube 10–12 mm., curved, sparsely glandular-pubescent outside; upper lip of two rounded lobes, 2–3 × 4–5 mm., probably erect; lower lip c. 10 mm. long, nearly 15 mm. across, median lobe c. 5 × 7 mm., laterals 4 × 7 mm., all broadly rounded.
Inflorescences in the axils of the upper leaves; peduncles 10–15 cm., shortly pubescent; bracts c. 2 mm., linear, shortly pilose; pedicels 15–20 mm., clad with short eglandular and a few glandular hairs intermixed.
Stamens arising somewhat above the middle of the tube; filaments 3.5 mm., glabrous, connective forming round pad at back of anther; anther lobes 0.75 mm., divergent.
Ovary cylindrical, 5 mm. long, appressed-pubescent and with some sessile glands underneath; style 4.5 mm., pubescent-stigma capitate, papillose.
Herb with succulent brittle stem, sparingly pubescent chiefly at the nodes, sometimes swollen at the base.
Calyx segments narrowly triangular, 2 × 0.75 mm., pubescent with some glands near the base.
Capsule slender, glabrescent (35) 50–70 mm. long.
Seeds 0.6 mm. long, verruculose.
Disk annular, 0.5 mm.
