Characteristics

Perennial rosulate herb with a vertical rhizome up to 10 mm in diam. Leaves numerous, suberect, up to c. 600 x 200 mm, margin crenate, base cuneate, decurrent on petiole, pilose, veins on lower surface sometimes tinted red, petiolode up to 70 x 13 mm, pilose. Inflorescences at junction of petiole and petiolode, up to 25-flowered, many flowers open together. Peduncles up to 300 mm long; pedicels c. 13-20 mm long, both pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Bracts elliptic, up to 3 x 1.5 mm. Calyx divided to the base into 5 lanceolate segments, 5 x 1 mm. Corolla honey-scented, c. 40 mm long, glandular-pilose outside, acute hairs on roof of tube inside and minute unicellular hairs on floor, white, occasion-ally suffused palest violet, yellow stripe streaked and spotted violet-blue on floor of tube, two violet-blue chevrons or heavy wavy lines at base of lower lip; tube subcylindric, almost straight, c. 25 mm long, c. 10 mm across mouth; limb slightly oblique, upper lip of 2 suborbicular lobes,10 x 9 mm, lower lip c. 15 mm long, lobes suborbicular, 9 x 10 mm. Stamens arising in lower third of corolla tube, filaments conspicuously toothed at junction with connective, c. 8 mm long, twisted, curved, thickened about the curve, glandular; anther lobes 2 mm long, white, violet-blue at maturity; lateral staminodes conspicuous. Ovary c. 9 mm long, glandular-pilose; style dorsoventrally compressed, 6 mm long, glandular; stigma of 2 almost equal, papillose lips, offset upon the style so that the anterior lip projects forwards and the stigma is asymmetrical in profile. Capsule 28-67 (45 ± 6) mm long, 2 mm in diam., apiculate. Seeds0.9-1.1 mm long, reticulate.
